Understanding EMMA

Overview

EMMA® is not an automated pill box.  EMMA® acts as the “arm of the caregiver” in the patient’s home.  It provides documented and detailed medication administration.  EMMA® is remotely programmed by the pharmacist, insuring that the patient’s medications are delivered according to the physician’s prescribed dosing instructions.

Modeled after skilled nursing medication practices

EMMA® was modeled after the medication delivery practices of a skilled nursing facility. In these special care facilities, medications are dispensed by the pharmacist in blister cards and delivered to the facility along with a calendar showing the medication nurse when to give the patient their medications. Each time a change in dosing is made by the physician, a new calendar is generated by the pharmacy and delivered to the facility.

EMMA® utilizes the same principal except that the blister card is delivered to the patient or caregiver and the calendar is electronically transmitted using a wireless broadband connection to the EMMA® unit located in the patient’s home.

Understanding EMMA®

The EMMA® system consists of a Medication Delivery Unit (MDU) and wireless two-way web-based communications software that allows a physician, pharmacist or other licensed practitioner to remotely manage prescriptions stored and released by the patient-operated MDU.

The patient’s prescriptions and refills are packaged in standard-sized blister cards which are dispensed to the patient in place of an amber bottle filled with pills. Each MDU can hold up to ten (10) blister cards (multiple blister cards may be connected together) that are loaded into the MDU much like CD’s are loaded into a car or home stereo. The MDU identifies each medication automatically – no patient input is required. Changes made to the dosing instructions are transmitted to the MDU – no home nursing visit or physician phone instructions are needed.

When it is time for the patient to take their medications, the MDU emits an audible and visual alert to the patient. When activated by the patient, the medications are selected from the blister cards and released into the delivery tray.
